Scindia Kanya Vidyalaya was founded in 1956 by late Her Highness Rajmata of Gwalior, Shrimant Vijayaraje Scindia. The Rajmata, a strong supporter of the cause of women's education, felt the need of a premier institution in Gwalior where young girls would receive the best modern Indian education. The school embodies her dream of providing wholesome education in an increasingly competitive world.

FACTS
The institution has been set up by the Scindia Kanya Vidyalaya Society, an autonomous non-profit foundation, which is a registered charitable trust functioning through a Board of Governors. Teams from SKV participate regularly in inter-school competitions including IPSC events. A minimum of 90% attendance is mandatory. Any student whose attendance is below this is liable to be debarred from appearing for the final examination.

Scindia Kanya Vidyalaya is affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi and offers education to girls from class V to XII in English medium. -
There are three subject streams offered in class XI and XII. In addition to compulsory Core or Elective English, a student has to opt for four other subjects:
- Humanities: History, Geography, Political Science, Psychology, Fine Art (Painting / Dance / Music), Economics, Home Science, Physical Education, Hindi.
- Commerce: Business Studies, Accountancy, Economics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Informatics Practice, Home Science, Physical Education, Hindi, Psychology.
- Science: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Mathematics, Computer Science, Informatics Practice, Home Science, Physical Education, Hindi, Psychology.

Birthdays are celebrated every month in the house. A boarder is allowed to spend up to Rs.300/- on her birthday. The Maharani Chinkoo Raje Dining Hall is hygienic, spacious and well equipped, and seats 450 students at any given time The school has an auditorium with a seating capacity of 1000 is used for the morning assembly and for school functions.
